The city of spices, Calicut also known as Kozhikode is a city in the state of Kerala in Southern India on the Malabar Coast. Calicut is the third largest city in Kerala. The city of truth is also known as city of spices because of the trading point of the eastern spices. Calicut tourist places are more attractive through beaches and heritage sites.
Kozhikode was ranked as the second best city in India to live in. Calicut has been a city with flourishing domestic and international trade. Calicut has seen the ruler ship of the British, followed by the French and later the Dutch. A lot of these influences in the form of structures, monuments, commercial establishment can be seen in Calicut even today.
Of the many nicknames Calicut has it is also called city of sculptures. There are several different kinds of architectural sculptures located in various parts of the city. Calicut is known for its trade, commerce and economic development and over the years it has become the marketing center for pepper, coconut,coffee, rubber etc.
History
Kozhikode is the official name of the city but it is sometimes also known Calicut the English Anglicized name. Calicut witnesses milder weather during from December to January. Throughout the year Calicut can be visited but for tourists especially newlyweds from December till the month of March is best recommended for a tour of Calicut. Calicut has a well-developed infrastructure. There are adequate number of buses run by private owners and, well connected by rail and has connectivity to several different cities and even by Air it has connectivity to several international cities.
Calicut once used to house the Valliyangadi that comprised of a long narrow crammed street with small shops comprising of sari, cosmetics and several other goods that a normal shopper would want to shop for. For changing times, the street too has changed and now has shopping malls. The first mall built in Kerala was in Calicut. The good old big bazaar has now moved to the sweet meat street but it is matter of time before these old shops disintegrate into the maddening commercialization.
