Church of St Francis Asissi Goa built in 1661 by the Portuguese in the Portuguese vice royalty of India,The Beautiful structure of the church has a plaque which has detailed information about the structure. A statue of St. Michaels stands in the center. The church appears as if it has three tiers and there are octagonal towers on each side.
The main decoration on the church can be seen on the circular plasters and the Rosette bands. The central nave has a vault with barrel and supporting the choir is the rib vault. There is an internal buttress wall. The buttress walls separate the chapel and the supporting gallery on top. The frescoes and floral designs add to the appearance of the interior of the church. The main tabernacle is situated above the main altar. A statue of St Francis of Assisi, Jesus on the cross, statues of St Paul and Peter stand below in the main altar. There are painted panels that reflect the life of Saint Francis Xavier.
Connecting the SE cathedral convent and St Francis Xavier church is the palace of the archbishop that lies on the west side of the SE cathedral. Made of laterite blocks and lime plaster, the church stands in the direction of the west and comprises of three chapels on each side. You will find within the choir a choir, main altar and two altars on either sides. The convent presently is home to the archaeological museum.
The Tuscan appearance of the church adds a unique appeal to the church’s exteriors. The main entrance is set in Manuline style. You will also find Corinthian features and Baroque style. A statue of the lady of the miracles stands within the church. The statue was brought from Jaffna. Bearing the insignia of the Franciscans is a wooden statue of the Saint Francis himself. He bears a pedestal and to its left is a wooden pulpit that has beautiful and rich looking carvings comprising of floral designs. These intricate floral designs make the main altar look splendid. The gilded Frescoes a tabernacle supported by four evangelists, the intricate floral designs, Baroque style architecture and more characteristic features about the church make it a place worth visiting in Goa tour package.
The church makes for an interesting attraction for both pilgrims as well as leisure travelers. The tabernacle was and is still used to set up the holy sacrament. Beneath the Statue of St Francis and Jesus Christ on cross you will find three vows inscribed for the saints- Obedience, humility and poverty. There are large beautiful paintings on the wood that showcase the life of Saint Francis- starting from the angel reveling the birth of child who would become a saint to his childhood, anointment, joining the Dominican Odder, sultan of Damascus to showing the wounds to Pope Gregory.
