Referred to as the gateway of Vanni , Vavuniya Sri Lanka is a big town of Vavunia district. The town once served as a front line for the civil war that prevailed in Srilanka for so many years between the LTTE and Srilankan army. Vavuniya is a place not much preferred by the Tamil people however with its repertoire and role played during the war it is a place worth visiting from tourists from different parts of the globe.   Vavuniya has a major Srilankan air force base hence security remains high in the region but it safe to state that a lot has changed since the war came to an end. There certainly is a lot of calm compared to the heavy heart beats and paranoid during the tension between the army and Tamil militants.

You can board budget flights to reach Vavuniya and visit the limited but worthwhile places. Vavuniya is relatively small town in the major Vavuniya district; hence you can take a tour of the place by foot.

Things to see and go to places in Vavuniya

  • Thecolorful Kandaswamy temple is vibrant and has stone carving on its roof anybody can enter the temple and has a beautiful appeal factor to the naked eye. Best of all it is located very close to the city center.
  • The archaeological museum is another place you should visit in Vavuniya. It can be reached by foot and is easily accessible from the market. The pretty an attractive white building is appealing despite being small in structure. The museum houses a fabulous collection terracotta figures, Buddhasstatue and more. All of these belong to the 10th or 15th century period and all the collections are definitely jaw dropping to  watch
  • Kudiyiruppu Pillaiyar Kovil is another attraction in Vavuniya. The temple is situated near has a large water pond which looks very attractive. The land area surrounding the temple is spacious and huge and with lot of greenery presenting a perfect ambience for a calm mind seeking tranquility and serenity. The beauty of the temple is that it is in close vicinity to a full-fledged fruit market yet it manages to stand proud with complete silence around its surroundings besides offering your prayers you can also visit the temple to enjoy the scenic view of the surrounding, smell the fresh air and watch the beautiful water tank.
