Spread across 176 acres, the National zoological park delhi known as Delhi zoo located near old fort is a place to visit in Delhi tour package. You will find a sixteenth century citadel, a vast spread of Green Island, a vast collection of animals and birds. Amazing aspect about the park is that this huge park is situated in the middle of Delhi’s busy urban area.
The zoo is home to 1350 animals and has 130 species of animals and birds from different parts of the world living here at the zoo. You can walk and take a tour of the zoo or use a battery operated vehicle to take a tour. The park is well set and has adequate signboards informing visitors of where the different amenities are made available.
The zoo is well equipped with adequate number of toilets. Outside food cannot be carried in but water bottles can. There is a canteen available inside the zoo to take care of your hunger needs. The battery operated vehicles maintain green norms and do not emit any hazardous air ensuring the zoo environment remains clean and green. Nearly ten years later the National zoological park delhi came into existence Delhi zoo was renamed to National zoological park in 1982 to present it as a model for other zoos in the country. The zoo houses Chimpanzees, hippopotamus, spider, monkey, African wild buffalo, Gir Lion, Leopards, Rhino; Emu so on and so forth. The zoo attracts migratory birds making the zoo a splendid place to visit for bird watchers. There are swamps designed for the water birds hence from the sight of peafowl to the water birds the zoo is a place worth visiting. The center of the zoo houses the underground reptile house. Moated enclosures were recommended for the new zoo by Carl Hagenbeck who was hired to draw the plans for the zoo. Teh new plan was approved by the Indian government and by the end of 1959 the zoo was complete.
National zoological park delhi is part of the conservation program of the central zoo authority where breeding of Bengal tiger, Indian Rhinoceros, Swamp Deer, Asiatic Lion, Brow Antler Deer and Red jungle Fowl takes place. The breeding program has seen successful results in brow antler Deer. There were only two deer that were breaded and were further distributed to zoos across India. The animals have even adjusted well with climate and change of location.
The park is huge and vast spread hence adequate drinking water facilities have been provisioned. The park is ideal to visit on a family trip especially with kids. Inside the park you will find the Kos Minar from the Mughal period
