Srilanka has a very distinct fry and wet season. However due to geographical positioning as an island it majorly witnesses tropical Sri Lanka climate. The Southern region of Srilanka witnesses heavy monsoon during the month of May through September and is completely dry during December till March.  The annual precipitation is significantly lesser than the rest of the country. The upper land regions of Srilanka are cooler and considerably quiet temperate.

According to studies done by the researchers Srilankaruns a possible chance of witnessing drought due to irregular weather patterns. However this situation is anticipated to take place only in three to seven years span.  The situation could cause severe droughting during the summer season and excessive flooding during the monsoons. This though is only a study, in reality Srilanka does see flooding during monsoon especially in the South Western region. Hence it’s advised that travel plans during this time of the year in the South Western regions are avoided.

Srilanka has low lying coastal plains, the southern and central regions slope into hills and ranges. Beaches and bays dominate the island. Heavy precipitation towards the mountain ranges and rain shadow in the central highlands bring down nearly 4000mm of rainfall the entire year.
